Less than a week before qualifying at the Hungaroring the world of motorsport witnessed a tragic accident when 18 year old Formula 2 driver Henry Surtees was struck on the head by a lose wheel from another car and later died in hospital. 6 days later, during the second round of qualifying at the Hungaroring Felipe Massa was struck on the head by a heave spring that broke free from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn BGP1. Thankfully, Felipe Massa survived the accident which saw him plunge head on in to a tire wall at high speed.

Formula 1 Round 9, Nürburgring Qualifying

Jenson Button, Brawn GP.

Jenson Button, Brawn GP.

Wow! That was possibly the most intense qualifying session this season. When the rain came in Q2 I thought Jenson had missed his window, and then he pulled a lap out right at the end of the session on dry tyres to land himself safely in to the top 10 shoot out. Rubens was amazing the wet/dry conditions, he was the only driver who really had a feel for where the circuit was going which he demonstrated when he put on a set of dry tyres while everyone else was still on the inters. The pole shoot out didn’t disappoint either, just when I thought Brawn where going to be sitting behind two Red Bulls Jenson & Rubens slammed in two laps out of nowhere. Jenson’s final lap was particularly interesting because it looked like he had conceded defeat with a slow second sector, but both the Brawns where supreme in the final sector. I can’t wait to see the fuel loads!

Don’t miss the race tomorrow.

Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix 2009

Another great race to add to a great season of racing so far! I was expecting the pecking order to mixed up once again this weekend, with many teams bringing upgrades to their cars. However, on a whole it is more or less the same order we’ve seen at previous races, with Ferrari and Toyota being the exception.

Ferrari have made a big gain with their latest upgrades, but it still hasn’t helped their strategy & reliability. Kimi retired early on and Massa gave up two places in the closing laps to save fuel which he ran out of only a few corners after crossing the finish line. Toyota just seem to have slipped back in to the mid-field, and what was Jarno doing? I’m sure he could have made some sort of an attempt to slow it down before rejoining the track and taking out 3 other cars in the process!

Well in the end it was another Brawn 1-2 and another win for Button. I’m really hoping Button can get the title this year! I’m also really kicking myself for not putting a bet on when the odds were really good before the season. Anyway, roll on Monaco!
